Clara Sarah Paul was born in Dunedin in 1871. She was the daughter of George Smith Paul and Clara Sarah Rowland, the third of elven children.

In 1893 Clara was a machinist living in Forth St, Dunedin. In 1896 Clara married James Henry Gould and they had seven children.

Clara died on 11 February 1949 at 32 Woodhaugh St, Dunedin and James died in August the next year. They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
