Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
This appears to be the signature of David Griffith Jones’ wife Jane.
Jane Dew was born about 1816 in Bermondsey, Surrey – the daughter of William Dew, a wine merchant.
She married, silversmith, Thomas Estill on June 17th 1840 in Bath, Somerset.
Thomas died in 1845 – he is buried in the Bath Abbey Cemetery.
At the time of the 1851 census, Jane was living with her brother John and his family in Bath. When they emigrated to Australia a few years later Jane appears to have accompanied them.
She sailed for Otago in 1864 on the City of Hobart and she married David Griffith Jones, a mariner & widower in Dunedin in 1866.
In his later years David worked as a clerk and messenger for the Otago Harbour Board.
When Jane signed the suffrage petition, they were living in College St, Caversham.
David died in 1895 and, as a token of respect, the flags at the Harbour Office were flown at half-mast.
Jane died at her niece’s home in Caversham on December 26th 1900 – she is buried with David in the Southern Cemetery.
