Biography contributed by Rosa Opie

Dorothy Jones (nee Tweedy) was born in 1847, in Durham, England to Stephen Tweedy, aged 36, and Ann Tweedy (nee Birkbeck), aged 33. She was the third child of six, and the third of five girls.

Dorothy married George Jones on September 13th 1865, in Christchurch, when she was 18 years old. The couple had nine children throughout twenty years of their marriage – Dora, Walter Joseph, Charles Frederick, Eleanor Eva, Frank, Frederick, Susie, Ann Eliza and George Stephen.

George founded the Waikato Times and the Auckland Echo. Later on with the help of others, he also founded the Dunedin Evening News. He purchased the Oamaru Mail in 1877, and he and Dorothy along with all nine of their children, lived there for the majority of their lives.

George and Dorothy celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1915. George passed away on 16 December 1920 at the age of 76. Dorothy passed away on 24 April 1942, in Naseby, Otago when she was 96 years old. They are buried together in Oamaru Cemetery.
