Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Eliza Ann Griffith was born in 1848 in Surrey, England – the daughter of Ambrose Griffith, a stationer, and Deborah Ann Jennings.
Eliza married Thomas Arlidge in 1874 and they had two children before they emigrated to Otago in 1876 on the Calypso.
A further five children were born after their arrival in New Zealand.
Thomas worked as a candlemaker and when Eliza signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Leith St, Dunedin.
They later moved to Roslyn, Dunedin where Eliza died on 16 September 1927. Thomas died in 1928 and they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
