Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Palmer was born about 1841 in Birmingham, England – she married Joseph Armishaw, a stationer and widower with five children in 1868.

Together they had a further 6 children before the family emigrated to Canterbury in 1876 on the Rangitiki.

A daughter was possibly born on board and five more children were born in New Zealand, three of who appear to have died in infancy.

The family settled in Christchurch, moving to Dunedin in the late 1880s.

Joseph died in 1886 and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition she was living in Brook St, Dunedin.

She died on 26 November 1901 and is buried with her family in the Northern Cemetery.
