Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Kydd was born in 1863 in Durham, England – the daughter of Robert Kydd, a carter, and Jane Frater.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in the 1880s and they settled in Caversham.

Elizabeth married, blacksmith,  John Barnes at her home on 19 March 1888.

They had, at least, seven children and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Great King Street, Dunedin.

They celebrated their silver wedding anniversary in 1913 and Elizabeth died at her home two years later on 9 July.

John died in Dunedin in 1928 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
