Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Emma Beckingsale was born in 1870 in New Zealand – the daughter of Henry Beckingsale, a draper, and Sarah Bromley.

When Emma signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Park St, Dunedin working as a nurse.

She did not marry and at the time of her parent’s golden wedding celebration in 1915 Emma was working for the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society in Bengal.

She died on 5 April 1955 in Dunedin and is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
