Emily Charlotte Ann Justina (Amy) Gascoyne was born on 31 May 1842, Elgin, Moray, Scotland to Charles Manners Gascoyne and his wife Isabella Augusta Eliza Gascoyne nee Campbell. Her parents were taking an extended break in Isabella’s native Scotland over the autumn/winter of 1841–42, as a break from living with Charles’ parents in Clifton, Bristol after Charles’ furlough from his regiment in India had been extended due to his continued ill-health. She was baptised after their return to Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.
Emily’s father was a Colonel in the 5th Bengal Light Cavalry and served in India. After his retirement from the Army in 1853 the family migrated to New Zealand and settled in Motueka, Nelson.
On 23 February 1874 Emily married her cousin Henry Morris Gascoyne, a farmer in New Zealand.
Emily and Henry had five children. Henry had a freehold property, Part section 755 Waimate. By 1922 the family had moved to High Street, Waimate.
Henry Gascoyne died on 7 May 1926, age 84 years and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Anglican section, Plot 000749.
Emily Gascoyne died on 7 September 1933 age 91 years and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Anglican section, Plot 651A.
Mrs Gascoyne was a Cousin of the late Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquis of Salisbury, who was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1885–1902.
Her Maternal Grandfather was Surgeon Donald Campbell of the 5th Bengal Light Cavalry, the last child to be born in old Dunstaffnage Castle (Argyleshire) the hereditary seat of the Campbell clan.
