Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Eliza Catherine Scollay was born about 1839 in South Leith, Edinburghshire, Scotland – the daughter of William John Scollay, a master mariner, and Maria Caroline Augusta Munro.

She came to New Zealand with her parents in the mid 1850s – her father died in Auckland in 1861.

Eliza married Edward Watkins, a solicitor, on 18 November 1862 at St Matthew’s Church, Auckland.

They had two sons before Edward died in Nelson in May 1867, their youngest son Ernest died later that year in October. Edward and Ernest are buried in the Wakapuaka Cemetery.

Eliza re-married on 18 September 1873 at All Saint’s, Nelson to Alexander Greenlees McKinlay, a lighthouse keeper at Cape Campbell.

They had five children and Alexander had the charge of lighthouses at Manakau, Centre Island, Taiaroa Head and Nugget Point where Eliza signed the suffrage petition.

After this the family lived at Cape Maria, Godley Head and Bean Rock in the Waitemata Harbour.

Eliza died at her home in Devonport in August 1918, she is buried in the O’Neills Point Cemetery, Devonport.

Alexander died at their daughter’s home at Hook near Waimate in 1924, he is buried in the Waimate Cemetery.
