Elizabeth Ann Ellis was born in 1856 in Yorkshire, England, the daughter of Joseph Ellis, a brickmaker, and Martha Goodall.
She emigrated to Canterbury with her family in 1859 on the Clontarf and they settled in Timaru.
Elizabeth married William Cody, a draper, in 1882 in Timaru. They had 8 children.
When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Palmerston. They moved back to Timaru in 1894 then to Patea, finally retiring to Wellington.
Elizabeth died at her home on January 1st 1923 and William died later that year in September. They are buried together in the Karori Cemetery.
Elizabeth’s obituary said she was “for many years an esteemed resident of Patea”.
