Emma Esther Jackson was born in 1871 to Margaret and Thomas. In 1888, at the age of 17, she married Wellington coach builder George Mitchell Leiz. They had four children; three sons and a daughter. One of their sons died as a baby. They later settled in Bunnythorpe, near Palmerston North. Emma died in 1942, aged 73.
