Elizabeth Emmerson arrived in Port Chalmers with her family in 1880. By the end of 1882 her husband and two youngest children had died. She raised the other children five children on her own in Caversham, Dunedin. The family emigrated from Weardale in the North Penines where the men were lead miners.
