Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Eleanor Jane Hughes was born in 1865 in Flintshire, Wales – the daughter of Hugh John Hughes and Jane Watterson.

She grew up in the Isle of Man where she married John Thomas Griffin on 8 May 1884.

Sometime after this they emigrated to New Zealand and settled in Greymouth where Eleanor signed the suffrage petition.

They later lived in Blenheim, Hamilton, Wellington and Auckland before retiring to New Plymouth.

Eleanor 'was closely identified with work in Whiteley Memorial Methodist Church and took a particular interest in the Bible classes, of which she was leader for the senior girls for some years. Other activities in which she was interested included the missionary auxillary and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union'.

Eleanor died in New Plymouth Hospital on 4 October 1937 and John died in 1941 – they are buried in the Te Henui Cemetery.
