Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Euphemia Harley Calman was born at Emerald Hill, Victoria, Australia in 1860 – the daughter of Benjamin Calman, a shipwright, and Jane Cargill.

She came to New Zealand and married Alexander Stuart Ewan, Master of the SS Merksworth, on 9 June 1882 at Westport.

They had six children and were living in Dunedin when Euphemia signed the suffrage petition.

The family spent some time in Westport before returning to Dunedin in the 1910s.

Alexander died at his home in 1907, in 1913 Euphemia sold her household furniture before moving to Melbourne.

She had returned to Dunedin in time to feature in  the 1925 electoral roll and she died at her home in Castle St, Dunedin on 23 June 1933.

She is buried with Alexander in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
