Emilie Hewitt was born in 1867 in New Zealand – the daughter of George Hewitt, a carpenter, and Ann Bussey Hubie.
She grew up in Dunedin and when she signed the suffrage petition Emilie was living with her family in Cannongate working as a saleswoman.
She married accountant Walter Morris in 1896 and they continued to live in Canongate where Walter died in 1922.
Emilie died in Dunedin on 11 February 1942 – she is buried with Walter in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
