Emma Cottrell was born in 1864 in Kent, England – the daughter of John Hann Cottrell, a bootmaker, and Eliza Jane Care.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Geraldine Paget and they settled in Dunedin.
Emma married, teacher, Francis Hilgendorf on 15 January 1889 in the Dunedin Baptist Church.
They had six children, one who died in infancy, and when Emma signed the suffrage petition they were living at Taieri Beach, south of Dunedin.
They later lived in Oamaru, Waitati and Green Island before retiring to live in North East Valley.
Francis died in 1944 and Emma died on 11 April 1965, aged 100. She and Francis were both cremated.
