Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Jane Marten was born in Debden, Essex, England in 1841 – the daughter of Joseph Seaton Marten, a shopkeeper, and Margaret Lucy Macklear.

In 1892, in New Zealand, Elizabeth married Albert James Beck – a widower with six children, whose wife had died the previous year. They had no other children.

Albert died in 1916 and he is buried in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin, with his first wife Jane.

After Albert’s death Elizabeth moved to Napier where her brother’s family lived.

She died in Napier on 4 November 1922 and is buried in the Park Island Cemetery, Napier.
