Emily Jane Isbister was born in New Zealand in 1864, the daughter of William Isbister, a shipwright, and Jane Elizabeth Clark.

She married Henry Boyce Carey, a coachbuilder, at the Gipps St Wesleyan Church, Collingwood, Melbourne, Australia on 10 June 1885.

They had two children in Australia before they returned to Otago. They had a further six children in New Zealand, one who died in infancy.

When Emily signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Lower Russell St, Dunedin.

Henry died in 1934 and Emily died on 1 September 1941. They are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
