Elizabeth Johanna McQuilkan was born in 1858 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Donald McQuilkan & Catherine Nicholson.
The family came to New Zealand about 1863 and settled in Whare Flat near Dunedin where Donald had a farm.
Elizabeth married Charles Henry Knowles, a bushman, at her family home on 29 May 1884.
They lived in Tapanui and do not appear to have had any children.
They retired to Dunedin where Charles died in 1900, he is buried in the Tapanui Cemetery.
Elizabeth died on 1 January 1936, she is buried with her sister in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
