Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Jane Philp was born about 1855 in Northamptonshire, England – the daughter of Samuel Philp, a bricklayer & builder, and Mary Ann Emery.

Her father emigrated to Otago about 1871 and Elizabeth followed in 1872 with her mother and siblings on the May Queen.

The family settled in Kirkland Hill, Dunedin and Elizabeth married Richard Walter Richardson, a ship’s steward, in 1885.

They had two children and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Kirkland Hill.

Richard died in 1914 and Elizabeth died on 21 February 1928, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
