Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Johnston was born about 1823 in Innerwick, Haddingtonshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Johnston, a farmer, and Isabella Dodds.

She travelled to New Zealand and she married Thomas Johnson, a farmer, on 29 December 1864 in the Stirling Parish.

They had two sons and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition they were living on their farm 'Roseburn' at Wangaloa.

Elizabeth died at her home on 10 August 1896 and Thomas died in 1909, they are buried together in the Wangaloa Cemetery.

Her obituary said she 'was of a most genial disposition, cheerful, and happy, and was highly respected by all with whom she came in contact...No one ever visited her without feeling that she was a good Christian woman.'
