Ellen Lucy Allen was born in New Zealand in 1852 to Frederick Kenneth Allen and his wife Frances Stratford Elizabeth (nee Houghton) of Te Aro, Wellington and Forsyth Island, Pelorus Sound. Her father died in 1872. In 1885 Ellen married Charles Edmund Hylton, a librarian and Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Their children were Eric Alan (1886-1949), Ina Gwendoline (1888-1970) and Ivy Irene (1892-1933). The family lived in Ingestre St and Ball St, Whanganui. At the death of her mother in 1915 and father in 1919, they were living in Gonville Ave, Whanganui. Ellen died in 1924, aged 72.
