Emily Mary Ashton was born in 1871 in New Zealand – the daughter of Anthony Ashton, an engineer, and Emma Yeomans.
When she signed the suffrage petition Emily was living with her family in Greymouth.
She married Robert James Burrell, an engine driver, in 1894 and they had five children.
Emily died on 15 March 1910 – she is buried with her mother and brother in the Karoro Cemetery.
Her obituary said she 'was of a retiring disposition but made many genuine friends, who will be shocked to learn of her untimely death'.
Robert remarried in 1914 – he died in 1950 and is buried with his second wife also in the Karoro Cemetery.
