Biographical information provided by Helen Smith for the He Tohu exhibition:

Elizabeth Mary Black Coupar, the eldest daughter of James and Mary Anne Coupar (nee Atkinson), was born in 1867. Her father, a cordial manufacturer of Waikouaiti, became bankrupt in 1870.

In 1871 Elizabeth was burnt in a fire started by her brothers - her life was saved thanks to the quick thinking of an aunt.

In 1891, the 24-year-old Elizabeth married a draper named David Moir Lockhart at Knox Church, Dunedin. They had four children: Ella Marian (1894, who married Noel Sandes), Allan Leslie (1897-1952), David Roy (1902-1979) and Colin McDonald (1909-2005). The family lived in Milton, Dunedin, Lawrence and Mataura.

Elizabeth Lockhart died in 1941, aged 74.
