Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elspet/Eppy Murray was born about 1835 in Scotland. She married Angus Polson on 30 May 1860 in Rogart, Sutherlandshire and later that year they emigrated to Victoria, Australia on the Manata.

They had five children, one who died in infancy, before they sailed for New Zealand where last four children were born.

When Elspet signed the suffrage petition they were living in Enfield in North Otago where Angus was working as a farm manager.

In 1901 Angus died when he was thrown from his horse. Elspeth died on 12 February 1912 in Oamaru – they are buried together in the Old Oamaru Cemetery.

Her obituary said 'she was well known and widely respected for her acts of benevolence and her hospitality, and the news of her death will be received with feelings of regret by a very large circle of friends.'
