Elizabeth Dewar was born on 3 February 1848 in Fifeshire, Scotland – the daughter of David Dewar, a farmer, and Ann McFarlane.
She emigrated to Otago in 1858 with her family on the Palmyra and they settled in Dunedin.
Elizabeth married Alexander Marshall, a cordial manufacturer, on 8 November 1872 in Dunedin and they had three children.
When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Milton.
Alexander died in 1906 and Elizabeth died at her home on 30 March 1933, they are buried in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
