Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Euphemia Mitchell was born on 1 December 1868 in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Mitchell, a farmer, and Joanna Donaldson. (See 126 Joanna Mitchell)

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1881 on the Jessie Readman and they settled at Purekireki in South Otago where they had a farm and where Euphemia signed the suffrage petition. She married Peter Stenhouse McLaren, a farmer, on 6 June 1899 at her brother’s home in Dunedin and they had two sons.

The family farmed at Owaka before moving to Palmerston where Peter died in 1914.

Euphemia died at her son’s home in Oamaru on 23 April 1937, they are buried in the Palmerston Cemetery.
