Biography contributed by Pam Logan, great-granddaughter of Eliza

Eliza Payne (nee Dorling) was born in 1847 in Clerkenwell, London. Her parents (William and Maria Dorling) were gold-workers and later moved to Birmingham. Eliza married John Payne of Lower Brailes, Warwickshire in Birmingham in 1863.

Eliza and John came to New Zealand on the Lancashire Witch – landing in Auckland in June 1865, but then moving down to Rangiora, where their ten children were born. The eldest daughter, Alice Maule (nee Payne) (1871-1940) was visiting from Wellington when she signed the petition with her mother in 1893.

One of Eliza's granddaughters, Maud Payne, married a long-time mayor of Rangiora, Charles Tyler. Some other of Eliza’s descendants are the sisters Alison Holst, Patricia Payne and Clare Ferguson.

Eliza died in Rangiora on 13 January 1927 aged 79.

Her youngest daughter Doris Cramp (nee Payne) was my grandmother. Doris’s mother-in-law Ruth Cramp (nee Aslin) also signed the petition (sheet 189).
