Ellen Rose Lord was born in Newton, Suffolk, England – the daughter of Walter Lord, a farmer, and Frances Underwood.
She married John Thomas Burrell in 1875 and soon after their marriage they emigrated to Otago.
They settled in Arrowtown, Central Otago where John worked as a storeman and they had six children, two who died in infancy.
In the early 1890s the family moved to Tapanui, South Otago where Ellen signed the suffrage petition.
Ellen died in Palmerston North on 22 September 1940 and John died in 1941, they are buried together in the Terrace End Cemetery, Palmerston North.
