Eliza Annetta East was born about 1843 in London.

She came to New Zealand in the early 1860s and had three children with John Foster, there is no evidence of a marriage.

She married John Smith, a bootmaker, as Eliza East, in 1868 and they had four children.

When Eliza signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Arglye St, Mornington, Dunedin.

John died in 1911 and Eliza died on 14 April 1931. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
