Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Elizabeth Dunckley was born about 1828, probably in England.
She married shoemaker William Steer on 6 March 1847 in Hobart Tasmania.
They had three children in Australia, one who died in infancy in Victoria, before the family came to New Zealand around 1854.
They had a further 10 or 11 children and settled in Nelson before moving to Greymouth in the mid 1880s where Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition.
Elizabeth died on 9 July 1908 in Greymouth.
Her obituary said that prior to her illness 'she was particularly hale and hearty and was in the habit of visiting a numerous circle of relations, friends and acquaintances'.
William died in 1908 in Nelson – they are buried together in the Karoro Cemetery.
