Emily Stokes was born in 1874 in New Zealand – the daughter of George Stokes and Florence Carsons.
Her father died in 1888 and when Emily signed the suffrage petition she was living with her mother in Alexandra St, South Dunedin.
Emily married Thomas Johnston Young, a storeman, on 8 March 1899 in Dunedin and they had four children.
Emily died on 30 November 1954 and Thomas died in 1966, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
