Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Elizabeth Farquhar Colledge was born on May 31st 1842 in Roxburghshire, Scotland – the daughter of Joshua Colledge, a stocking maker, and Elizabeth Farquhar. She came to Dunedin with her family in the early 1860’s where she married, clerk, John Tennant on June 2nd 1864.

They had 6 children, one who died in infancy and lived, at first, in Ravensbourne on the Otago Harbour.

In the 1880’s they were living in Caversham and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition, they were living in College Street.

She died at her home on August 31st 1899 shortly before John retired from his post as chief clerk in the Customs Department.

While on a trip ‘home’ to Scotland, in 1902l John re-married – after the death of his second wife in 1910 he returned to New Zealand.

John died in 1914 and is buried with Elizabeth in the Southern Cemetery.
