Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Emma Allan was born in 1852 in New Zealand – the daughter of James Allan, a farmer, and Jane Sutcliffe.
She grew up on the family farm 'Hope Hill' at East Taieri, where she married George Malcolm Thomson, a teacher, on 23 December 1876.
They had six children, one who died in infancy, and when Emma signed the suffrage petition they were living in the High School Rectory in Roslyn, Dunedin.
Emma died on 21 July 1894 and George died in 1933 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
