Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Agatha Elizabeth Barber was born on 22 June 1836 in Cambridgeshire, England – the daughter of George Barber, a schoolmaster and clergyman, and Elizabeth Ann Christmas.

She emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1863 on the Monarch and later that year she married Frederick Wayne.

They sailed for Otago in September 1863 and they bought a share of a large farm at Shag Valley.

They had six children, one who died in infancy. In 1870 'The Grange' was sold and the family moved to the Glenledi Estate near Akatore.

This farm was not a great success and in the mid 1880s the family moved to Milton where Agatha signed the suffrage petition and Frederick worked as a commission agent.

Frederick died in 1901 and Agatha died at her home in Milton on 30 July 1907, they are buried together in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
