Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Edith Cooper Hey was born in 1873 in England – the daughter of Alfred Hey, a butcher, and Mary Alderson.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1877 on the Marlborough and they settled in Oamaru.

When Edith signed the suffrage petition she appears to have been living with her sister Louisa in Clyde Ave, Mornington in Dunedin.

She married John Robert Stone, a seaman, in 1910 and they had three children.

Edith died on 1 September 1944 in Dunedin – she is buried with two of her sisters in the Northern Cemetery.

John died one month later – he is buried with Edith’s mother in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
