Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Edith May Wyon was born on 2 May 1853 in London – the daughter of Leonard Charles Wyon, an engraver for the Royal Mint, and Mary Birks.

She emigrated to Otago via Australia in early December 1882. She married Deane Clifton Sharpe shortly after on 16 December at All Saints’, Dunedin.

Deane was a Petty Officer in the Torpedo Corps. They had five children and when Edith signed the suffrage petition they were living in Gray St, Port Chalmers.

Edith died on 22 September 1899, aged 47 – at the news of her death flags were hoisted at Port Chalmers in her memory.

Deane died in 1938 – they are buried in the family grave in the Port Chalmers Cemetery.
