Nelly/Eleanor Ann Coull was born in London, England in 1861, the daughter of William Coull, a printer, and Eleanor Butcher.
She came to Otago with her parents about 1870 and the family settled in Dunedin.
In 1876 Eleanor was appointed as a pupil teacher at the South School. She was promoted to fourth assistant at William St School in 1881, a position she resigned in November 1883.
On 27 March the following year she married Rev. John Foster at Roslyn, Dunedin. They had no children.
When Eleanor signed the suffrage petition they were living in Rothesay, West Harbour. They later moved to Portobello where John died in 1905.
Eleanor then went to live with her parents in Roslyn, Dunedin. Her parents both died in 1917 and Eleanor died on 14 July 1918. They are all buried with John in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
