Elizabeth Lawrie was born about 1825 in Fife, Scotland.

She married William Hutton, a damask weaver, on May 6th 1850 in Dunfermline. They had four children before the family emigrated to Otago on the Strathallan arriving in January 1858.

They settled in Dunedin where they had a further four children. Two of their children died in early childhood.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition they were living in Opoho Rd, North East Valley, and William was working as a dairyman.

William died in 1906, and Elizabeth died on June 14th 1909. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
