Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elisabeth/Elizabeth Wilson was born about 1848 in Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Wilson, a labourer, and Charlotte Cochrane.

She emigrated to New Zealand, possibly with her sister Helen (See 80 Helen McMurtrie), in the 1860s and she married John McMurtrie, a labourer, on 27 January 1871 in the Milton Parish. They had seven children and lived in Milton where Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition.

John died at their home in 1918 and Elizabeth died at her daughter’s home in Gore on 10 February 1930, they are buried in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
