Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Gatheral McCorkindale was born on 30 March 1871 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of Hugh McCorkindale, an edge tool finisher, and Jane Sutherland. (See 140 Mrs Jane McCorkindale)

She emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Tweed with her family and they settled in Dunedin.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition she was living in Duncan St, South Dunedin with her family.

She married Wallace Alfred Scarfe, a clerk, in 1900 and they had four children.

The family moved to Wellington in the 1920s then later to Hamilton where Elizabeth died in March 1945.

Wallace died in 1959 – they are buried together in the Hamilton East Cemetery.
