Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Ann Heaton Ellison was born in Manchester, England in 1848 – the daughter of John Ellison, a spindle maker, and Maria Greenfield.

She married John McLean, a tailor and draper, on 2 October 1869 and they had four children, one who died in infancy, before the family emigrated to New Zealand about 1879.

They settled in Outram, West Taieri where they had a further five children, one who died in infancy, and where Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition.

They retired to Dunedin in the 1900s where John died in 1904 and Elizabeth died on 16 June 1922, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
