Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Eliza Ann Hawkes Thorn was born in 1850 in Leigh, Essex, England – the daughter of Richard Thorn, a bricklayer, and Hannah Hawkes.

Her father died in 1856 and her mother re-married the following year.

Eliza married John Samuel Ingram, a carman, in 1869 and they had three sons, one who died in infancy.

In 1875 the family emigrated to Otago on the Zealandia and settled in Dunedin.

One of their sons died the following year - they were to have a further seven children, one who died in infancy.

John worked as a cordial and soft drink manufacturer and when Eliza signed the suffrage petition the family were living in St David St, Caversham.

Eliza died at the Dunedin Hospital on 1 March 1910 and John died in 1929, they are buried in the family grave in the East Taieri Cemetery, Mosgiel.
