Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Elizabeth Cross was born about 1837 in England. She married John Cross in Surrey in 1867.
They do not appear to have had any children but when they emigrated to Otago in 1878 on the Piako they were accompanied by nine-year-old Priscilla Fitch.
She was possibly Eliza’s niece and she also signed the petition. (See 40 Priscilla Grimmett)
When Eliza signed the suffrage petition she was living in Grosvenor St, Kensington, Dunedin.
In 1907 Eliza and John sailed on the Tongariro bound for Saffron Walden, Essex, England.
John died in October 1918 and Eliza died the following month in the workhouse infirmary, they are buried together in the Saffron Walden Cemetery.
