Eliza Emma Parsons was born in Lambeth, London in 1840 – the daughter of William Parsons, a hawker, and Sarah Ann Beauvais.

She married John Hayward, a jeweller’s assistant, in 1860 and they had nine children, one who died in infancy.

The family emigrated to Otago about 1877 and had one more daughter after their arrival.

When Eliza signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Kirkland Hill, Kaikorai, Dunedin.

John died in 1911 and Eliza died on 8 July 1915, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
