Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Eliza was born in New Zealand in 1866 – the daughter of George Condor Hitchcock, a farmer, and Jemima Stumbles.
When Eliza signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family at Mihiwaka near Dunedin.
She married her cousin William Hitchcock, a florist, on 18 July 1896 at All Saint’s Church, Dunedin.
They had three children and lived at Belvidere Gardens in the Leith Valley where they had a 1 ½ acre property. In 1898 they attempted to sell the property due to William suffering an accident. The propery was described as 'well stocked with a very large collection of the best bulbs, specially selected for Florist Business; also Roses, Heaths, and Helebores etc.'
The property did not sell as the family were still living there in the early 1900s.
William died at Waitati in 1919, he is buried in the Northern Cemetery.
Eliza died on 10 April 1931 at the Tokanui Mental Hosptial, she is buried in the Hamilton East Cemetery.
