Eliza Jane Ashton was born in 1846 in Heywood, Lancashire, England – the daughter of John Ashton, a warehouseman, and Elizabeth Spencer.
She emigrated to New Zealand and she married Henry White on 4 July 1866 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Dunedin.
Henry worked as a nursery and seedsman at Tokomairiro and they were to have 13 children, one who died in infancy.
In 1877 the nursery was sold and Henry worked as a storekeeper in Milton where Eliza signed the suffrage petition.
Henry died in 1908 and Eliza died at her home on 8 November 1916, they are buried together in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
