Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Eliza Westacott was born about 1835 in Barnstaple, Devon – the daughter of William Westacott, a groom, and Elizabeth Woolacott.
She married Thomas Martin, a skinner, in London in 1862 and they had seven children, one who died in infancy, before the family emigrated to Otago in 1883 on the Catalonia.
They settled in Dunedin and were living in Kaikorai Valley when Eliza signed the suffrage petiton.
Eliza died on 14 November 1905 and Thomas remarried in 1907.
He died in 1924 – they are buried together in the Green Island Cemetery.
