Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Eliza Smith was born about 1838, probably in Tasmania, Australia.

She married Alfred George Price, a saddle and harness maker, on 26 February  1856 in Launceston, Tasmania.

They had four children before they moved to Waikouaiti, north of Dunedin, about 1863 accompanied by Alfred’s widowed father.

In 1865 their five-year-old daughter Hannah died as a result of falling down the stairs with her younger sister in her arms. She died instantly from a broken neck and is buried in the Waikouaiti Cemetery.

A few years later the family moved to South Dunedin and when Eliza signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Russell St and Alfred was working a town clerk.

Alfred died in 1897 and Eliza died on 29 August 1917, they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
