When she was about one year old her family moved to Warepa in South Otago.

Elizabeth married Peter Abernethy, a butcher, on 22 November 1883 – they had no children.

She signed the suffrage petition in Owaka – two of her sisters also signed the petition in Owaka (See 136 Margaret Todd and 136 Jane Dabinett)

Elizabeth died at Owaka on 26 August 1926 and Peter died in 1931, they are buried together in the Owaka Cemetery.
